The State of Washington has opened up Chinook Salmon fishing on the Icicle River near Leavenworth. The season will last from May 15th through July 31, 2008 and the legal area to fish in is from 800 feet above the mouth of the river to 500 feet below the fish hatchery. The Associated Press picked up on the story of a raccoon causing a power outage here in Wenatchee. It is always interesting to see what local stories make it out of our local area.
Raccoons are normally mischievous and cause problems all the time, but it usually confined to garbage cans being tipped over and camp food being stolen .

Here is a great article explaining that many people will be staying closer to home for their vacations this year due to the higher cost of fuel. And Washington State is a great location for local vacations. Whether you’re talking the San Juan Islands, the Okanogan highlands, the Columbia Basin, the Pacific Coast, Olympic National Park, the Columbia River Gorge, or the Cascade Mountains, there is a huge diversity in vacation destinations right here at “home”.

There has been a settlement in the almost two decade old battle over a proposed gold mine located in the Okanogan highlands. This article gives an overview of the process and ends commenting that the once divided community can now come together. A great compromise.

It finally happened, it was a late winter but the North Cascades Pass opened after a long winter closure this morning. The North Cascades Pass closes every year over the winter and its opening in the spring is looked forward to by locals, travelers of the Cascade Scenic Loop, and outdoor recreation enthusiasts. As you can see from the picture below there is still “some” snow in the area.

For any of you that have never driven across the North Cascades Pass, it is a real treat. You will be taken to views you will not believe. A true treasure right in our own backyard.

The founding president of Big Bend Community College in Moses Lake has passed away. Alfred “Al” Phillips was the president of this local college in the late 1950s and early 1960s before moving on to even more impressive accomplishments in the field of education. In this news from the Organic Trade Association (OTA) Ray Fuller, owner of Stormy Mountain Ranch of Chelan has been announced the winner of the 2008 OTA Organic Farming Leadership Award. Fuller completed switching his orchard over to all organic in 1988 and an interesting side note is that he received the second ever organic certification in the entire state of Washington. This is great recognition for a local farmer in the organic marketplace.
