There are many times while driving through North Central Washington that one can look at a structure, roadway, or project and wonder how those people from the past were able to get it done.
From the leveling and construction of the I-90 freeway to each one of the hydroelectric dams that span the Columbia River, imagine the manpower needed and the vision it took to say “yes, we can do that”. From Stevens and Blewett Passes to the incredible North Cascades Highway, the building of communities on Lake Chelan that are not connected to the outside world by roads, and the thousands of miles of hiking trails that zigzag here and there, all of this at one time was just an idea or plan.
North Central Washington is very lucky to have had such visionaries, planners, and doers with the forethought to undertake these projects. There are many more that I have not mentioned as well, some of them big and some of them relatively small. So next time you’re driving down the highway and pass something you pass everyday, imagine… just how did they get that done?
Powerlines stretch across the mighty Columbia River and don’t stop until they reach the top of a cliff on the other side. Just how did they get that done?
